Indigenous Livelihoods in North Queensland
Scholarship Description
Literature identifies 5 key assets that determine sustainable livelihoods: human, social, natural, financial & physical capital. Studies on Indigenous indicators have shown there is co-occurrence of low assets, inadequate strategies & poor outcomes to sustain livelihoods. Frameworks developed with Indigenous people which value Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing in approaches to land, livelihoods, and governance are needed. Communities across North Queensland are increasingly challenged in relation to livelihoods, challenges that are likely to heighten with economic & climate change, environmental pressures & government policies in relation to services & welfare support. This project will examine the issues that Indigenous communities face in maintaining livelihoods in NQ & strategies for creating employment and economic opportunities.
